Solar eclipses in Spain
2027 and 2028

Three solar eclipses over Spain in three consecutive years — a once-in-a-lifetime sequence

Next eclipse · Monday 2 August 2027 · Total eclipse over Cádiz and Málaga

Why Spain?

Between 2026 and 2028 Spain sees three central solar eclipses in three consecutive years. The first, on 12 August 2026, crossed Teruel and is now archived on this site. The second, on 2 August 2027, will cross Cádiz and Málaga with the longest totality of the trio. The third, on 26 January 2028, will paint a ring of fire over Seville and Córdoba.

3 in 3 years Consecutive eclipses

Two total eclipses and one annular eclipse in such a short span: a sequence without precedent in modern times.

4m 38s Longest totality

Tarifa, on the Strait of Gibraltar, in 2027. In 2028 Seville gets up to 7 min 15 s of annularity.

Sunny climate Good odds of clear skies

The Cádiz coast enjoys almost cloudless summers, and Andalusia's winter climate is far milder than central and northern Europe's.

Three paths, three landscapes

In 2027 the path of totality reaches the Atlantic coast and the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Sun will be high in the sky at mid-morning. In 2028 the ring of fire will form over the low plains of the Guadalquivir valley, with the Sun very low on the western horizon on a January evening.

Infrastructure, not just sky

A spectacular eclipse is of little use if you can't get there, find a bed or move around safely. Spain combines road and air links with the rest of Europe, a mature hotel industry and long experience of handling big crowds. Even so, each eclipse will draw tens of thousands of people into a window of a few hours: planning ahead — where to stand, where to sleep, how to get there — is essential.

Never look at the Sun without certified protection. During the partial phases you need ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses. In 2027 you can only take them off during totality itself; in the 2028 annular eclipse, never — not even during the ring of fire. Read the eclipse safety guide.
